Spinal Fusion L4-L5 6 weeks post op pain

From: Philippa - on 10/06/2012 10:19am

Hi - I had a spondylolithesis grade 2, and a herniated disc pressing into my sciatic nerve, resulting in a fusion using a titanium rod and screws and a laminectomy, 6 weeks ago. I consciously noticed improvement every day, but this last week I have felt stiffness/spasm in my hips and lower back area. I had build up my walking to an hour a day, with great ease, but now feel sore when I walk. I am still in my brace, but was starting to leave my brace off for short trips to the toilet and around my house. I am hoping I have not done something to damage the fusion.

I regard my op as being a success, but I am left with a horrible pulling nerve irritation in my right leg (my good leg) I am told that it will go eventually. I can handle this compared to the unbearable pain I endured before my op. .

I would love to know if anyone has had these symptoms .

Hi Philippa, I`m glad your feeling better right after your fusion. If it feels better iced maybe your over doing it .I was in massive pain for 6 weeks. Then I was able to go out of the house and life was driving to PT and Doctor`s. I had a lumbar 3-4 fusion. Sam

Hi Sam - thanks for your reply. How far are you from your op now and how are you feeling? Were you flat on your back for the first 6 weeks. What is doing too much, time wise? I am definitely more active with standing and sitting for longer periods, and less time lying flat. I am allowed to start driving this week and will see my doc the following. He is away, so I am unable to ask him these questions.

Philppa, When I say over doing it .Just do half as much for 3 days and see if you feel better. I had to go to a rehab center for 1 weeks after my fusion. Then I was in house for 5 weeks I was from bed to a lift chair. I was working till the day before my fusion I haven`t since. My surgery was 7/22/10. What happened to me after was I like over fused where my nerve canals closed up.I was in more pain then ever 3 months post opp. My surgeon that did my fusion said I was fused he was done go to PM. They gave me shots did tests told me I was in bad shape. They were all togather so they can`t say much bad about the surgoen. I found a doctor in NJ (NYC) looked at my MRI told me I needed a nevre canal opening. I had it done that leg was fixed(the next day after surgery). That really sucked becuase I couldn`t walk for 3 months. There will be other ppl with better stories then mine. My fusion helped me I`m not bone on bone now. But my pain level is worse then before just different. I`m having a SCS put in next week. I hope that works like the trial did.Sam

Good luck! I hope that you will eventually have less pain. I have heard good stories and bad ones and seems like no guarantees. It takes a lot of strength to endure such back pain as one has before the op, but even more mind power and strength to be left with pain post op.

My doctor's orders were to do very little from the time I was discharged, but do a little more each day. I think I got too active and went a bit far, because I was feeling so good, so will take your advice and rest up for 3 days. I have not driven yet and will delay it until I see my doctor next week.
