Increased pain with Epidural Injections

Started by 1255392780@facebook on 04/27/2012 12:08am

I was told I had fibromyalgia 7 years ago, I have the normal symptoms of fibro but have a lot of hip and left leg pain, numbness and tingling, left arm numbness, tingling, and both arm pain and electrical feeling throughout my body. I went to several drs and pain specialists. Recently I went to a new pain specialist and he wanted to do a MRI on my spine, we got the results back and he said he didn't think that most of my problems were from fibro that I had a lot of spine issues. My neck is straighter and curves the opposite way and L3-4, L4-5 bulge and Herniation at L5-S1, Grade1 Posterior Spondlisthesis at L5-S1. He told me I needed to have a neurosurgeon consult but I had to have at least 2 epidural injections because insurance would not approve the consult without them. That they would not help me at all. He told me he would numb me and I would not feel a thing maybe some pressure and that because I had increase inflammation and he added more fluid I would have increased pain in my leg and hip area but that would only last a day or two and it would be bad..

II went for the first injection and he numbed the area and I felt the needle go in and it was pressure then I felt a sharp pain I told him this, I then began to feel more pain. He continued the procedure, I continued to feel the sharp pain throughout the procedure, it brought tears to my eyes. Mind you I have a pretty high tolerance for pain. He said you shouldn't feel any pain just pressure, next time we will use conscious sedation. For the next 4 days I was in bed in severe back pain, I DID NOT even have back pain before the injections, I had hip and legs pain. I couldn't get out of bed. The pain continued for several days. I called the dr and he said it was just the inflammation.

I went for the 2nd one and they done the conscious sedation and once again even under sedation I felt the sharp pain and it brought tears to my eyes. He says I shouldn't feel sharp pain it should just be pressure. The same thing happened again severe back pain and in bed for several days. I am finally up this time I am experiencing back pain on and off with movement. I called him once again and I also am having increased leg pain and numbness. He is sending me for my neuro consult and a EMG on my left leg.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am worried he has caused damage. I didn't have any lower back pain prior to these epidural injections and now the pain is unbearable at times.

i had 1 epidural for a herniated disc 2 yrs ago. I had an adverse reaction to it. Sweats and queezy for a week. Dr. said it would pass.it didn't. My pain was worse than ever and i felt every bit of that needle during procedure.it was horrible! they never wanted to do another one on me after that. i was sent to pain management and have been on medication ever since. I have evidently a low tolerance to steroids.Sometimes these doctors will not admit they were wrong.
