Question on injections in sacroilliac

Started by sue in ohio on 11/12/2010 11:25am

I am a 61 year old retired school teacher who has fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain, had spinal fusion in L5 in 1998, now have more degerative discs in L3 and L4 and arthritis in both joints of the sacroilliac. I am going to have an MRI with contrast done to see what might be causing the sudden increase of pain in low back and hips. My doctor mentioned all of these different injections but if they don't knock me out for them there is no way. I have had some horrible experiences with getting IVs in that hurt worse than labor pain and other medical proceedures that were bad enough that now I get severe panic attacks concerning them. Dr. Pellegrino thinks my pain may be caused by the arthritis in the sacrolliac and suggest injections into those joints, but I am terrified. Has anyone had any of these shots and if so what was it like?

Hi there Sue in Ohio!!!! :) I'm Becky in Oklahoma!! I, too, have Fibromyalgia. I also have SLE (Lupus), Scleroderma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Severe Osteoporosis (sitting here on a fractured rt. Hip, w/ a permanent fractured Vertebrae shaped like a Horse Shoe, lol!! Of course, I did NOTHING to get these....hmm) One morning, I awoke to find that I could not MOVE!!!! Of course, this was due to the fact that at SOME point the previous pm., I SOMEHOW developed 11 fractures on 9 ribs....and I def. had NO fun that nite!! LOL!! BUT- I digress! My POINT, (and I DO have one!!:) is that I am/ jave been ALL of my LIFE, a NEEDLE PHOBE!!!! And, yes, I have had those EXACT injections in the EXACT area. I was a nervous WRECK!!!!! The first one was 1 WEEK after 41 sticks in attempting to start an IV., the pre-op dept. FINALLY called in Anesthesia to find a vein as they had BLOWN any easily accessible ones. The Anesthesiologist that showed up was my ex-husband. THANK GOD he got it on the first stick!!!! (I KNEW leaving him was a mistake!!!LOL!!!) Anyhow, In a state of HIGH anxiety, I lay for the injection. The Dr. was VERY wonderful about telling me what he was doing/ going to do, etc.... I NEVER FELT A THING, except a TINY bit of pressure!!!! Not EVEN the LOCAL!!!! I was SO thrilled!!!! Later that nite, my back DID hurt. It was a searing, burning pain. BUT- was EASILY controlled by Ibuprophen and Tylenol #3. Just one. The next am., I LITTERALLY BOUNCED out of bed!!!! This was about 9 yrs. ago. The injected area is the ONLY area of my body that remains PAIN FREE!!!!!!! DO it!!!!! ASAP!!!!!! I don't know how OTHER people feel, but, for me, it was a GOD-SEND!!!!
Good Luck!! I FEEL for you!! ( You might just ask if you could have 1-2 Xanax for the anxiety about 30-60 min. before the procedure. I did. :) Becky
