Preparation

Started by JuvaP on 09/05/2010 2:49am

Hi Everybody,
I finally have an appointment with a surgeon for 9-20. I'm not real confident in my latest MRI, but it showed a bulging disc L5-S1 with degeneration & a cyst on the nerve root sheath T12- L1. I've been dealing with this for over a year & a half & my condition is deteriorating, despite oral steroids, anti-inflamatories, hot/cold therapy & finally epidurals. Doctors involved tend to agree that surgery is called for. At this point, I have been forced to restrict my work day to 5 hours, my left foot is becoming numb, the pain is incredibe. At this time I'm on 10mg Lortab every 6 hours & muscle relaxers that barely take the edge off.
I have no idea what kind of surgery will be suggested, but regardless, I know that my ROM will most likely be limited for awhile.
I'm trying to find out what preparations I can do to make things easier once I come home. The only help I will have is my 18yo daughter. Also, what kind of equipment does anybody suggest? Are there simple modifications that anybody has discovered that made their recovery more tolerable? My bed comes just above my kneecap, so I'm thinking that I may need to get another mattress to make it easier to get in & out of. Any suggestions/wisdom that you can share would be greatly appreciated.

I want from the hospital to a rehab center. I was only there for four nights. I went home with a hospital bed, Walker, Butt wiper and graber. The hospital bed went back in a week. If you see one for sale that was bought and never used buy it. I seen one in the paper for $100 that's cheaper than the co-pay and delivery that was renting one for a week. Then you'll have for one forever. The handicap bars in the shower were necessary. I plain old had a tough time you my whiz through it all. I was 48 at the time I just 49. I am feeling pretty good today 6 1/2 weeks postsurgery.I was home alone post surgery. Best of luck to you Sam

Besides what sam mentioned, id invest in a shower seat as u can take baths for the first few weeks and standing long enough to complete a shower was excruciatingly painful to me the first few weeks.

Juva make sure you let your surgeon know what pain meds you have been on. If That would be a problem with controlling pain postsurgery. They said I had the massive pain postsurgery because of the pain meds I was on presurgery. That was a bunch of crap putting it lightly. I see other people have trouble postsurgery needless pain. Make sure your surgeon believes in pain meds! My surgeon did not believe in pain meds at all. That was his person personal preference. His belief was surgery fix the problem. I am still on the same massive pain meds that I was on presurgery. I am still with my pain management doctor. I am not a surgical success story at this point .2 months postsurgery having a fusion. Be very careful. Good luck Sam
