If you get to the point of needing injections, you may want to consider surgery. I had surgery on L3-L5 and S1 in 2004. No piece of cake but I could not stand the pain in my back and legs. You need to go to a first class neurosurgeon. He will have several tests done on you which may include a spinal tap. Tests are extremely important to show how and where the damage is located in your back. . If the doctor thinks you need surgery, then you must think of three things, your age, your weight, and your career. Believe me your age does count. Your neurosurgeon will require you to get a clean bill of health from your primary care physician to make sure you can proceed with a surgery. If you are overweight, you need to loose weight. Fortunately, I was very small and that helped in getting in and out of bed, etc. Last but not the least is your career. This depends on how severe your back is, but if you have a really bad back and have extensive surgery it takes time to recover, So if you are sitting at a desk all day, you may want to change careers. You want to be able to move around and get exercise. When a person is in pain, they will go to any means to change this. Believe me, I did. I had a great surgeon. I asked him how many of these types of surgeries had he done and he said he quit counting at 1000 and that was several years prior to my surgery. There is no cut and dried advise about your back because it depends on the severity of damage in your back. The best advice as stated earlier, get a great neurosurgeon and have plenty of test done. I hope that I have been of some help to you. I do understand pain. It can be so bad, you simply will do almost anything and I mean almost anything to rid your body of that pain. But if you get a bad surgeon, I can only imagine what your experience will be, because it is serious to have back surgery, period. I have no regrets on my surgery. There was no choice for me. Here's wishing you good health and a happy future.

like justice said you need a good surgeon to diagnose your condition. not that you will need surgery but the surgeon is the most experienced person to evaluate you. those shots are temporary anyway even when they work. they are steroids that may take away the inflammation. when you get a good diagnosis you will be told the best solution for your individual situation. the treatment might be physical therapy to strengthen your muscles. if youve already seen a surgeon thats great. if not then make an appointment and we wish you good results.....pete
