My bone graft was not growing new bone, and was given a bone stimulater machine in attempt to get the bone to heal. Many here r on pain meds.Iam not on pain meds, but i do have the right side pain, that goes to my right leg.Pt had helped for awhile. but my pain is everyday. And the weakness to the right side is possiable something else. Dont give up. Wish u all the best. U r not alone in this.

My lumbar fusion was in November 2008. Yes the pain can get better. I found that aqua therapy helped me for pt.....while the pain may never completely go away, it does get better, the healing process just takes time. God Bless You

Why are you yelling?

You understand your post is much easier to read when it is not all in CAPS.

It is well known in the online communities that all caps indicates shouting. Now that you know that, you can refrain from all caps. Live and learn.

I had L4-5 L-5-S1 surgery April 29 and now, July 26, I feel like I am in more pain than before surgery. I am concerned that my doc will reduce my meds because he has said that post-op he would do that. I will, of course, ask him please to not do that. I don't want more surgery. It was worse than I thought it would be. I hope to hear that people have recovered and felt better after fusion surgery--or, not. Either response would be helpful. I never thought I would be in this much pain. I hate to think I am going to have to learn to live with this.

hi im sorry to hear about the pain you are experiencing. i'd hate to say it but i had an L5S1 fusion 4 years ago and i have been in more if not the same pain as before it. i had a level 5 rupture. and right now, i am in more pain than i ever thought was possible to deal with. i get spasms in my arms and legs that make me look like i am having a seizure and is painful. my lower back hurts so bad that it is ruining my relationship with my girlfriend and the doctors look at me like i am crazy. i am going to be 29 in november and i am looking into permanent disability because i cant hold a job like this. no doctor can figure out what is wrong with my spine and i am becoming more and more depressed everyday. i dont want you to get your hopes down but my surgery started out the same way. i SWORE up and down that the surgery did not fix it and i know inside that the cage and screws are causing all my problems now. keep fighting cause i still am.....

I wish I could answer your question about the pain. I had spinal fusion L4-L5 two months ago. Had pins put in on left side, not right Was on back brace until the 14th. Had x-rays, fusion was evident. I had no real pain, not on any pain pill. Started PT a day and a half later. Pain started in lower back and particularly on left side of hip and left leg. Pain kept increasing until it got so bad I couldn't sit or lie down without extreme pain.

The dr put me on Prednisone two days ago but the pain really didn't go away. So I'm waiting a few more days and then have another x-ray to see if something is wrong. Anyway, I sincerely hope there is an end to the pain for you and for me!

Hi Gray809,
Now am waiting for MRI with contrast to see why I have pain in left leg and hip areas. Even on my good days, I feel it when I try to sleep at night. The dr blames PT, but it could have been something else I did. Or else the problem was there since surgery and got exacerbated by too much movement. Since surgery, I've a had numbness in my toes, worse on left side.

Anyway, hope things are going better for you.

I am 42 years old with scolliosis and disk disease. I have had two epidurals and have done physical therapy-none which have taken the pain away. I was told that I am bone on bone and need a fusion. I also have hip pain in my right hip, which causes me to limp. I am scared to have the surgery, but then I am scared not too. I was fired from my job in July when my FMLA expired, but thank God I was approved for long term disability thru my company. My doctor stated that I should be able to go back to work in three months after the fusion (after PT), but that sound too soon to me. Realistically, how long is recooperation, and how much pain is there after the surgery? I don't want to be released to go back to work to soon and loose my disability. I do not have a job to go back to and I have 3 grade school children to support,

Just wanted you to know I had lumbar fusion on May 19 of this year. I was in ICU for two weeks, and five weeks in in patient rehap. I was told I could drive in two weeks and go back to work on Aug 10, 2010. My boss call my phone day of my surgery and left a message saying she had to replace me. I was a daycare teacher, and love my job. than in August my pain was very bad. So my doctor decided
to take all my hardware out. That was done on Sept 2, 2010, and I'm still having burning pain and now both of my legs hurt. Now I'm waiting to see my doctor on Nov 2, 2010 to see about a nerve stimulator. I've heard good things about the fusion and bad. Sometime it help some people and other times it don't. Do what you think will benifit you, thats what I did. I just want the pain to go away.
Please let me know what you decided and I will be praying for you..Don't worry GOD will help you with the best answer. Wish you all the best.

Sorry to hear about all your pain. The dorctors tell me it hasn't been that long since my surgery; I had spinal fusion in L4-L5 on May 25. I am 59 years old. The screws and pins were only put in on the left side, for some reason the surgeon couldn't get them in on the right I have continuing pain in my left leg and lower back and in some ways, feel worse than before the surgery. Still can't bend or lift anything. In spite of this, I returned to work a few weeks ago. I am going to go on a reduced schedule since I am exhausted all of the time. I have to be very careful about what I do with my body during the day because I suffer consequences at night (difficulty sleeping because of the pain). When people ask me whether I am better off since the surgery, I usually reply no. The recovery period is too lengthy and there are too many problems afterwards.

Hi Fenspot..I know about the pain at night. I don't sleep at all due to the pain on my right side, hip, groning area, and leg to toes. All my hardware is out except the bone graft. I regret the surgery all together. I would have stayed with the pain I had before surgery, because this is a long recovery and nothing seems to help, not even medication. so now I'm heading to talk to my neuro about my next option. Not sure if I want anymore surgery, what I want is to be active again. So I pray each day and night for God to help me. Keep in touch, let me know how you are doing.
