Hello my name is dave 14 years ago i leaned over to pick up a go cart by myself out of the trunk of my car and tore two discs couldn,t walk for a week laid in bed aching no doctor no meds no nothing toughed it out, anyway since then iv,e fallen on ice right on my tail bone and went down for another few days, again no doc no meds toughed it out , over the years ive fallen off trailers , i drove truck , and again down for days, ive roofed for years , mechanic, for years and had a job roof topping shingles from the back of a conveyor truck , witch involved bending lifting, heavy shingles, hundreds a day for 5 years , anyway i didn,t want to face the fact that i had a problem with bad back pain and didn,t want to accept that i had to see a doctor because i couldn,t walk without pain, even get up without pain , couldn,t sleep without pain so i sucked up my pride and went to see a doctor well the usual x rays, muscle relaxers, vicodin , etc. Well even with medicine i couldn,t even function without having excruciating pain and lost my job because all iv,e ever known is hard labor not too smart with computer jobs, etc. anyway went to emg doctor he said i have severe nerve damage in lumbar , so he sent me for mri ,and discs were in bad shape, my doctor sent me to see pain management doctor and what a joke i felt like the worlds biggest drug addict!!! boy i felt like a criminal when i left that place , they sent me for drug screen etc, anyway after epidural injections, did nothing so went back to pm doc , i mean proof is in pudding! long story short he tried different meds , but nothing strong enough to ease the pain, iv,e had physical therapy , no good just hurt worse! now pm doc put me on ms contin and it helps better but not quite enough relief ,so doc sent me to surgeon for opinion for back surgery but he said he can fuse the discs but not guaranteeing relief 50/50 , what do i do with pain management doc that i cant stand!! any suggesstions?

Well it is pretty typical for a surgeon to only give a 50/50 chance of fixing lower back pain with surgery. The goal of surgery is normally to stabilize the spine or to prevent further nerve damage. All the pain management in the world is going to fall short if you still have a mechanical problem generating pain. It is normally smarter to fix, stop or suspend the pain generator and then look towards long term pain management. Surgery is not a magic pill, but if it is truly needed, then that warrants investigating as well as looking into finding a PM doc that you can tolerate.

Kindest Regards

Go to COFWA and check out this condition and it's causes and SYMPTOMS. See if this is YOU. Also you can go to (adriaanliebenberg terminology). This will tell you exactly what your mri means in a simplified manner. It will also explain every condition you have that the Drs. leave out. This is for the lumber region. Good luck and I want to hear from you about what you are about to learn. This COFWA site about Arachnoiditis will help you make the decision as to have that surgery or epidurl etc... I care, Jan

Firt off, go to a Neurologist, second of all, do NOT get anymore epidurls. The Meds in it causes ARACHNOIDITIS. Ask your Dr. because he won"t tell you outright if you have Arach. But you have to see a neurologist. If you have a ruptured disk like I had, which I toughed it out for a year till the sciatic pain got so bad. The jelly like substance between the discs that leak out is like a poision. It gets all over your spine, nerves etc. and then that also is a cause for Arac. Read all my posts and you will see what I mean. I hope you the best. It was the same area as yours that I had surgery. Janice
