artitifical disc replacement for the lumbar region

Started by artificialdisc on 04/30/2010 10:18am

Hi,

My doctor told me that I have to have 3 disc replacement to my lower back using artificial disc.

I never have this oeprtation before and I am scare stiff of the procedure and the side effect and the danger this would caue to me.

If anyone have this done before, I will appreciate your help and comment

Thanks

My cousin had this done in Madison, WI. He was part of a study that was being done. This is still not approved and is still considered experimental as i do not believe they understand the longivity of this procedure. Most insurance companies that I am aware of do not cover this procedure. I am well aware of this as I went through three appeals for having the replacement done in my neck. Finally I had my neck fused. I am now facing having lumbar surgery and I know this will not be approved for me. I have United Healthcare Insurance so I am facing having fusions done. I will find out tomorrow. As i stated my cousin had it done and it was covered for him by him being in the study. His replacement was a total success and he had this done 7 years ago. Good luck! I wish all the best for you!

Hello dear patient,

Your spinal surgeon must be very brave to advise you 3 level total disc replacement. I am saying this considering the fact that US insurance companies allow only 1 level total disc replacement.

In my opinion, you need to consider going for second opinion, if needed third.

All best.

I agree with Roberto, I was just told the same thing from my orthopeadic spine surgeon. Only one level is approved and I need two levels done so I am not a candidate to have this procedure done.

All the best, but get a second opinion.
