Doctor Zaman is a Fellowship trained, Board Certified Interventional Physiatrist
practicing in Salt Lake City, UT. He was at the Intermountain Spine Institute
since 2005, and is now a founding member of Utah Spine and Joint Specialists,
PLLC, where is is the director of interventional physiatric care. In addition,
he is an adjunct instructor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University
of Utah and is also certified by the American Board of Anesthesia in Pain Management.
Dr. Zaman's focus is to provide unsurpassed spine care to his patients, while
dutifully fulfilling a responsibility to enrich the growing field of non-surgical
spine medicine. As an interventional physiatrist, Dr. Zaman utilizes various
imaging studies, electrodiagnostic evaluations, astute physical examinations,
and targeted x-ray guided procedures to accurately diagnose and effectively
treat painful spinal conditions.
Dr. Zaman's approach to patient care addresses spinal biomechanics, biochemistry,
pathophysiology, neurophysiology, mechanism of injury, and adjustment to injury.
His decision-making is guided by evidence-based medicine regarding spine care,
and he incorporates cutting-edge research findings into his practice. Dr. Zaman's
treatment interventions are formulated based on a tiered treatment approach
utilizing physical therapy, oral anti-inflammatory medications, and activity
modifications. Minimally-invasive, x-ray guided procedures may then be offered
prior to referral for surgical consultation, if the patient is felt to be an
appropriate candidate.
A variety of conditions are treated in Dr. Zaman's practice, such as work and
sports related spinal injuries, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease (or
herniated discs), radiculopathy (or a "pinched nerve"), facet joint arthritis,
hip joint arthritis, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and compression fractures.
Dr. Zaman's goal is to safely return the injured individual, worker, or athlete,
back to his or her prior level of function, productivity, or performance.
Dr. Zaman was trained in interventional physiatric spine care at the University
of Pennsylvania's Penn Spine Center in Philadelphia, PA. At Penn, he trained
under the direction of Curtis W. Slipman, author of "Interventional Spine, an
Algorithmic Approach", a text in which Dr. Zaman contributed two chapters. He
has completed post-graduate work in general surgery at Mercy Catholic Medical
Center in Pennsylvania and in physical medicine and rehabilitation at East Carolina
University / Brody School of Medicine in North Carolina, as well as at the University
of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, UT.
In addition to working with patients, Dr. Zaman participates in research studies,
publishes articles in medical journals, and has made several presentations at
national and local medical meetings. He is an editor of The Spine Journal
and is also an active member of such organizations as the North American Spine
Society, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, International
Spine Intervention Society, and the Physiatric Association of Spine, and Sports
and Occupational Rehabilitation.
