Dr. Kuivila was appointed to the staff of the Section of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1995.

After completing his orthopaedic residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 1988, and a pediatric orthopaedic surgery fellowship at Brown University, Dr. Kuivila spent six years in the United States Air Force Medicals Corps. There he served as the Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Wilford Hall U.S.A.F. Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and as a consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General.

Dr. Kuivila brings to the Department considerable experience and expertise in the management of acquired and congenital pediatric and adolescent orthopaedic disorders of the spine and extremities.

Dr. Kuivila's special interests include pediatric trauma, leg-length inequality, congenital and acquired scoliosis, and clubfoot surgery. His research interests include bioabsorable fixation, minimally invasive scoliosis surgery, and management of slipped subcapital femoral epiphyses.

Dr. Kuivila is a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.
