Dr. Christopher J. DeWald is Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center and Chief, Section of Spinal Surgery/Scoliosis at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally, he is lecturer and attending surgeon, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago; Consultant at Holy Family Hospital, Des Plaines, Illinois; and Consultant at Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Chicago Unit.

Following a medical degree at Rush Medical College, Rush University, Dr. DeWald completed a general surgical internship and orthopaedic surgical residency at the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinic in Chicago. During his residency, Dr. DeWald also completed an elective pediatric orthopaedic rotation at Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children. A Fellowship in spinal surgery and research was completed at the Chicago Spine Fellowship, Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center/Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children. Further, Dr. DeWald participated in the North American Spine Society’s Traveling Fellowship at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, the Institut Calot in France, and the Hokkaido University School of Medicine in Japan. In 1996 Dr. DeWald received Board Certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. DeWald is an active member of professional societies including: the American Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Scoliosis Research Society, North American Spine Society, Chicago Medical Society, Illinois State Medical Society, and Mid America Orthopaedic Association.

As an author and lecturer, Dr. DeWald has contributed 7 chapters to medical textbooks, 7 scientific abstracts, and 20 presentations and exhibits. Presently, he is on the Editorial Advisory Board for Spine Journal.
