About Richard V. Chua, MD, FACS

Doctor Richard Chua is a board certified neurosurgeon and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) at Northwest NeuroSpecialists in Tucson, AZ.

Dr. Chua received his Medical Degree and completed his surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine in Indianapolis. In his final year of residency, he was Chief Resident, Department of Neurological Surgery at IU School of Medicine. Prior to receiving his medical degree, Dr. Chua achieved a Master of Science at Purdue University School of Science in Indianapolis.

Dr. Chua is a Founding Member of the prestigious Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) and an active member of many other distinguished medical associations. These include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, American College of Surgeons, and North American Spine Society (NASS). In his home state, he is a member of the Arizona Medical Association, Arizona Neurosurgical Society, Arizona Delegate - Council of State Neurosurgical Societies, and Pima County Medical Association.

Throughout his academic and professional career, Dr. Chua has been recognized and honored by his peers. A few of his honors include Peri-operative Physician of the Month (Department of Surgery, Northwest Medical Center, Tucson), America's Top Surgeons Directory 2007 and 2005, 2004 (Consumer's Research Council of America), and for his neurosurgical research. Dr. Chua is active in surgeon education and training, especially in minimally invasive spine surgical techniques, within the United States and internationally.

A 63-year-old female presents with low back pain and bilateral leg pain approximately 18-months after a motor vehicle accident. Her back pain is worse that her leg pain. Pain limits her activity.
