About Jeffrey C. Wang, MD

Doctor Jeffrey Wang is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery at the Keck Medical Center at the University of Southern California (USC) at Los Angeles, CA. Furthermore, Dr. Wang is Co-Director of the USC Spine Center and Fellowship Director of the USC Spine Fellowship.

Dr. Wang earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences at Stanford University in Stanford, CA and his Doctor of Medicine degree cum laude at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Wang completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He continued his education by completing a Spine Surgery fellowship program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.

He joined the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and was later appointed Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery. Subsequently, he was appointed Associate Professor in both disciplines when he was designated Executive Director of the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center. Afterward, Dr. Wang was named Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the Spine Fellowship program.

To date, Dr. Wang has published over 250 articles, 23 book chapters, and 28 abstracts. Moreover, he has made over 700 presentations regionally and internationally, and has been a visiting professor throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has been the honored guest speaker at several international spine, orthopaedic, and neurosurgery society meetings. He serves on 10 editorial boards, including Spine, The Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques, The Spine Journal, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Furthermore, Dr. Wang is currently the Chairman of AOSpine, and serves on the board of directors of several major spine societies (North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society, Collaborative Spine Research Society). He is Secretary of the Cervical Spine Research Society, and Treasurer of the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Wang continues to run a basic science research laboratory and is in full-time academic practice at the University of Southern California.

Bone Grafts: New Developments

BMP-2 has shown to achieve spinal fusions faster and with higher success rates when used alone as compared to using the patient's autogenous bone graft. The use of BMP-2 in spinal fusions will eliminate the need for taking the patient's own bone.

Gene Therapy: On the Cutting-Edge

Gene therapy is a cutting-edge technique that has moved from theoretical fantasy into a potential medical therapy. It is a powerful research and educational tool that will open the doors to a greater understanding of spinal problems.

Long-term Effects of Whiplash

Whiplash is a neck injury that results when your head suddenly moves backward, then forward. Usually, whiplash goes away after a few weeks, but in some people, it may contribute to the development of other spine conditions later in life.

Cervical Myelopathy: Progressive Problems with Balance and Handwriting

Presented by: J. Wang MD

A 54-year old male with a prior history of a herniated disc at C5-C6 had an ACDF 8 years ago for arm pain and radiculopathy. In the past 8 months, he has had problems with balance and handwriting and clumsiness with his hands. He was found to have adjacent segment disease and cervical stenosis leading to cervical myelopathy.

Progressive Back Pain in a 26-Year-old Male

Presented by: J. Wang MD

This 26-year-old male, who previously underwent discectomy for radicular leg pain, now presents with progressive back pain.
