About Marcel F. S. Dvorak, MD
Dr. Marcel Dvorak was born in Toronto, Ontario and after two years of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, took his medical training at the University of Ottawa, graduating in 1984. Following a rotating internship at the Toronto East General Hospital, he moved to Vancouver, where he completed his orthopaedic residency training in 1990. Dr. Dvorak pursued spine fellowship training in London, Ontario with Drs. Stewart Bailey and Kevin Gurr and then in Bern, Switzerland with Professor Max Aebi and in Paris, France with Jean Dubousset.
Dr. Dvorak is currently Associate Professor and Head of the Academic Division of Spine, Department of Orthopaedics, at the University of British Columbia. He is also Medical Director of the Combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spine Program (CNOSP) at the Vancouver General Hospital. A strong proponent of clinical and academic focus through sub-specialization, he confines his practice to adult spine surgery.
His teaching efforts have been focused on the education of spine surgeons in advanced spinal surgical decision-making and techniques. He has served as faculty on numerous courses and has chaired advanced spine courses in Banff, Alberta, Vancouver, and Bermuda. He is currently a co-chair of the Spine Trauma Study Group, an international group of forty neuro and ortho spine surgeons who are committed to advancing our understanding of spine trauma management through education and research.
Dr. Dvorak has had the privilege of training a number of spine fellows. Recent graduates of the Vancouver Spine fellowship program have assumed successful academic positions at Memorial University in Newfoundland, the University of Manitoba (two surgeons), University of Calgary, and academic teaching posts in Dublin Ireland, Tel Aviv Israel, and several American Universities.
In his clinical research, he has an interest in: spine trauma, arthritis, and deformity; postgraduate spine education; surgical databases; and surgical outcome studies. Dr. Dvorak has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and has over 130 scientific presentations while having supervised the training of 27 graduate students and spine fellows. Dr. Dvorak and his wife, Sue, have been blessed with six children, whose current age range is between two and twelve years (no twins).
