Symptoms of Neck Pain

To get the best treatment for your neck pain, it's important to understand the symptoms—and what they mean.

Understanding Your Prescription

Understanding your prescription entails more than just filling it at the pharmacy. This guide includes important medication tips to take into consideration to help you and your family be healthy and safe.

Foraminotomy: Spinal Surgical Procedure

A foraminotomy may be combined with other procedures such as a laminotomy or laminectomy.

Foraminotomy: Taking Pressure off Spinal Nerves

Has your spine doctor recommended a foraminotomy to address your back pain or neck pain? Learn from a spine surgeon how a foraminotomy is done and how it can help your pain.

Reversal of Anterior Cervical Fusion by Placement of an Artificial Disc Prosthesis

The first reported case of reversal of a previously fused segment in the cervical spine using an artificial disc.

NSAIDs for Neck or Back Pain: Helpful or Harmful to You?

If you decide to stay on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help relieve neck or back pain, then it is important to see your doctor every three months or so because in a small number of people, NSAIDs can raise blood pressure and effect kidney function. This is uncommon but needs to be looked for by your doctor.

Foraminotomy: Posterior Cervical

If surgery is undertaken, it is usually performed as a minimally-invasive procedure. The procedure can be performed as a day stay surgery, but most patients stay in hospital for 1-2 nights.

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) Surgery Treats Low Back Pain

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a type of spine surgery performed to relieve pain and other symptoms caused by a problem in the low back.

The Role and Timing of Decompression in Acute Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract concerning conservative care and preventive measures of acute spinal cord injury.

Neck Pain Causes

You need to know what's causing your neck pain and potentially related symptoms. Here, SpineUniverse explains many common causes of neck pain.

Does Obesity or Extra Weight Cause Low Back Pain?

The results of a study involving almost 7,000 people confirmed the link between obesity and lower back pain.

Connecting Back Pain to Depression and Anxiety

As researchers are learning more about the links between pain, depression and anxiety, they are also gaining insight into ways to break the cycle of pain and emotional distress.

Three Factors May Predict Patients at Greatest Risk for Concomitant Epidural Abscesses

To help determine which spinal abscess patients are at the greatest risk for having another abscess in the spine, Ju et al. have created a predictive algorithm. They performed a retrospective review on 233 patients with spinal epidural abscesses who were treated at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston from 1993 to 2011 and who had undergone imaging of the whole spine.

Inflammation of the Sciatic Nerve: Sciatica

Sciatica—shooting pain down the back of one or both of your legs—is generally caused by inflammation of your sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body (it's about the width of your little finger). It runs along each side of your lumbar spine (low back) all the way down to your feet. Any type of pressure or pinching on this nerve can cause sciatica, inflammation, and other symptoms.

Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (PLIF): Surgical Techniques

Pedicle screws may be used in conjunction with a posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery to complete correction of a spondylolisthesis.

Charcot Joint in a Paraplegic

Presented by: L. Sekhon MD, PhD, FACS, FAANS
This 48-year-old man had been a complete T10 paraplegic, wheelchair bound since age 22. At the initial time of injury he had no surgery. Ten years prior to presentation in our clinic, the patient had undergone an L4-L5 and L5-S1 PLIF elsewhere, apparently for low back pain.

T3 Burst Fracture after Motor Vehicle Accident

Presented by: L. Sekhon MD, PhD, FACS, FAANS

A 32-year-old woman presented to the emergency room after a rollover motor vehicle accident. She was instantly paralyzed in her lower extremities. She had no sensation below the clavicles, and she had severe neck pain.

Lumbar Arthroplasty Revision

Presented by: L. Sekhon MD, PhD, FACS, FAANS

A 44-year-old woman reported low back pain and difficulty with defecation. The patient had surgery 2 years earlier with the implantation of an artificial lumbar disc. The surgery did not reduce her low back pain. A year post-op she developed increased low back pain.

L1 Burst Fracture: Bracing or Surgery?

Presented by: L. Sekhon MD, PhD, FACS, FAANS

The 55-year-old patient suffered an L1 burst fracture in an ATV accident.
