Gene Mapping of Inherited Spinal Disorders (Scoliosis and Degenerative Disc Disease)
Who May Be a Candidate
Individuals who will be considered for eligibility include: Men, women, and children who have a diagnosis of Scoliosis or Degenerative Disc Disease.
After Axial Biotech has received patient consent, the patient's diagnosis will be confirmed by a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who will examine the patient's medical records and x-rays.
Product Being Studied
The identification of genetic markers linked to Scoliosis and Degenerative Disc Disease. By understanding the molecular causes for these conditions, Axial Biotech hopes to be able to develop diagnostic/prognostic tests and potentially improved treatment options. Additionally, if the affected gene(s) can be isolated, the gene function may be deduced from the DNA sequence of the gene and possibly a molecular-based biologic or pharmacologic treatment could be developed.

Purpose and Objective
Family inheritance patterns in several spinal disorders suggest that there are significant genetic influences in these diseases. Prior research in Axial Biotech's laboratory has confirmed there are genetic markers for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, the identification of which may have a great impact on evidence-based treatment decisions. Further knowledge in these areas could lead to improved treatment options and less costly patient care.
The objectives of this genetic mapping clinical trial are:
1. Collect DNA samples and phenotypic information from individuals and families who have been diagnosed with Scoliosis and Degenerative Disc Disease.
2. Begin the search for a detectable and informative DNA polymorphism that segregates with the disease phenotype in these families.
Potential Benefits
Potential benefits of this study will be a greater understanding of these conditions
and the possible development of diagnostic tests or treatments that will benefit
people in the future. Participants will not benefit financially from participating
in this study.
Potential Risks
There is no risk to giving a DNA saliva sample.
Recruiting Locations (United States)
Axial Biotech is currently recruiting clinicians and patients throughout the
world who are interested in participating in these clinical trials. To learn
more about participation in these trials, please contact Axial Biotech, Inc.
at (801) 984-9100, or at info@axialbiotech.com.
Eligibility, Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria
Patients will be recruited into the Clinical Trial by self-reporting their diagnosis to Axial Biotech's Clinical Research department. Participants will be interviewed by a trained researcher over the phone or they can complete a questionnaire online. After obtaining informed consent, a saliva sample is then collected from the affected individual, their parents, their siblings, or other affected relatives. The saliva sample is self-collected, and is routinely done in the home.
